Teachers' readiness on the brink of new things

Teachers in Finland are under numerous demands and various pressures from outside teaching. Have been for a while. Along with the pandemic came another newcomer - hybrid and other blended learning. All of this has taken away a large part of teachers' enthusiasm to develop and train. Some are even ready to change their profession for these reasons.

An interesting contrast arises from the fact that, at the same time, school buildings are being built and repaired at high speed. I know from experience that a school construction or renovation project usually surprises the overburdened teachers, principals and educational staff with its speed, budget discipline and emphasis on construction technology.

Of course, the tendering professionals involved want to bring the tendering project to the "finish" quickly, so that we can build quickly and catch up on the next project. But what about the school, teachers and students? There is not enough time to think about the future, where new schools will be built or repaired.

What is your advice? Education? Teacher training?

We are of the opinion that for the well-being of students and teachers now and especially in the future, it would be important to act now. By helping teachers, we also help students.

Two years ago, we built a model for how teachers could be more ready to face the new. Over the course of two years, we noticed that the activity is, in addition to everything, fun and rewarding in many ways.

We are convinced that in this way we will not waste millions of euros on the fact that our new school buildings do not function now (or after decades) in the best possible way for the benefit of the student's well-being and learning.

Below is a link to the results of our work. We think we are very much on the right track. What do you think?

Do you want to join us in developing your school's activities and operating culture? Do you want experienced teacher trainers to help you with your work in school management or in a school project?
