ART OF SCHOOL DESIGN

Dia3b.jpg
Our company provides research-based services for the development of learning environments.
We support the design process, create and evaluate pedagogical plans, and develop organizational culture and the use of spaces.
Additionally, we assist in the implementation
of school buildings and offer a service
concept that helps teachers understand
how a new school building can facilitate their work, enhance well-being, support meaningful learning,
and improve overall comfort.

1. RESEARCH-BASED KNOWLEDGE
How should learning spaces be designed to optimize learning? How can we create calm environments, support students with special needs, and foster broad-based skills?
Learning environments have a significant impact on both learning and teaching. We continuously study this, and all our work is based on research.

2. GUIDING THE DESIGN PROCESS
Designing a school requires multidisciplinary collaboration, but teachers and principals often lack the time to engage deeply in the process. Principals also face the challenge of making decisions too quickly.
We help construction companies, architects, and designers consider user needs and create inspiring, pedagogically functional schools—now and for the future.

3. CREATING A PEDAGOGICAL PLAN
A pedagogical plan outlines how a new school building is intended to function. It defines spatial objectives and the principles of internal connections based on the descriptions of activities.

We assist in developing a pedagogical plan that aligns with the space program, project budget, and other guiding documents of the construction project—ensuring a cohesive and effective outcome.

4. EVALUATING DESIGN PLANS

Are the spaces sufficient?

Are the learning spaces the right size and shape? School activities involve constant movement and interaction—they are not static. When evaluating design plans, we use simulations and visualizations to assess how the new spaces will function in different situations.

5. DEVELOPING DESIGN PLANS
With experience from over a hundred school projects, we provide fast and effective support in refining design plans and addressing school safety and functionality concerns. We also assist principals in guiding designers to align with their pedagogical vision.

6. SUPPORTING SCHOOL IMPLEMENTATION
School implementation is a critical phase for a project's success, but it often happens under tight schedules at the start of the school year when teachers are focused elsewhere.

In Oppimaisema's concept, teachers receive early and guided orientation on the school's pedagogical model, spaces, technology, and furniture possibilities to ensure a smooth transition.

7. DEVELOPING SCHOOL CULTURE
We use proven methods to support the development of school culture. Principals and teachers have found our processes valuable in improving school operations and teaching practices.

“The work helped in designing our new school and making the most of technology.”

“Expanding our thinking and discovering new perspectives and possibilities was essential.”

“I gained a lot of concrete insights!”
“So much new information—I highly recommend it.”

8. ASSESSING THE USE OF SPACES
How effectively do school spaces support teaching and learning? How frequently are they used, how do movement and work activities flow, and what is the impact of acoustics and noise levels?

Our assessment combines quantitative observations and qualitative analysis, providing recommendations for improving space utilization and safety.

9. MY SCHOOL - SERVICE CONCEPT
In the My School service concept, teachers of a new school receive early and guided orientation on the school's pedagogical model, spaces, technology, and furniture possibilities to ensure a smooth transition.
The orientation is conducted either as a single intensive workshop or in two phases, where the application workshopfocuses on designing teaching modules that utilize new spaces and technologies.
